February 2006 Guess the Fish Contest
Answer & Winner
This months fish is a pollock. This sportier member of the cod family is popular with anglers. It resembles the cod in general body form, but can be easily distinguished from the cod, haddock, and tomcod by the projection of the lower jaw beyond the upper, and deep, plump body ending in a pointed snout. Its long lower jaw, forked tail, and light lateral line readily seperate it from its relatives.
The freshly caught pollock is a striking olive green or brownish above to yellowish or gray on the lower sides, becoming silvery gray on the stomach. This species attains a maximum weight of about 35 pounds corresponding to a length of about 3.5 feet, but most caught are around 4-15 pounds.
This months winner is Ron McClelland from Red Bank, NJ.
