March 2006 Guess the Fish Contest
Answer & Winner
This month's fish is a blue shark. This distinctive, beautifully colored shark is recognized by its very long pectoral fins, the bright cobalt coloration of the back, the snowy-white belly, and the long snout. The teeth are nearly triangular and are serrated along the edges. Reported to grow to 20 feet, however most average less than 10 feet.
The blue shark ranges throughout the temperate and tropical waters of the world, being one of the most common of the oceanic sharks.
Maturity occurs at 7-8 feet. Food taken includes mackerels, herrings, squids, and other sharks, also, flying fishes and anchovies. Sea birds resting on the surface are eaten as well as garbage thrown off ships. In other words they eat anything and everything. Although a voracious species, it puts up a poor fight on hook and line.
This month's winner is Dean Stracuzza from Brooklyn, NY.
