February 2004 Guess The Fish
Contest Answer & Winner

This month's fish is an Atlantic Cod.The cod differs from the Haddock in its pale lateral line and can be readily seperated from the pollack by the large barbel and projection of the upper jaw beyond the lower.
Most fish taken in the New England area range from 6-12 pounds, although 50-60 pounders are not at all unusual. The largest cod on record weighed over 210 pounds and was over 6 feet long. They occur from the surface to a depth of more than 1,500 feet, the young being found in the shallower water and large cod generally in depths over 60 feet. During the winter they come into shallower water, during the summer deeper.
Cods feed upon shimps, barnacles, worms, clams, snails, mussels, crabs, lobsters, squids and various small fishes.Clam , herring and squid being the popular baits on party boats who fish for them. This months winner is John Emmel from Philadelphia, PA.
