March 2004 Guess The Fish Contest
Answer & Winner
This month's fish is a Spot. A small, well-known member of the croaker family. The maximum size is about 14 inches, weighing less than 2 pounds but the average is generally smaller than 10 inches. Spots range from freshwater to salinities nearly twice that of oceanwater. Sometimes they occur in large schools, from the shallows of coastal marshes to at least 112 fathoms, and ocassionally they are extremely abundant in deep water, more commonly during fall and winter. Spots occur over sand and mud bottoms, as well as oyster and shell reefs.
They eat a variety of animals and plants, small plankton and and bottom-dwelling crustaceans, although worms are also of importance.Young spots eat the smaller stuff, whlie the bigger ones eat worms and small fishes. In turn, spots are fed on by striped bass!! The male spot does make a drumming sound like other members of the croaker family. This months winner is Donald Chrans from Franklinville, NJ.
