April 2004 Guess The Fish Contest Answer & Winner This month's fish is an American Shad. It is silvery with a green or bluish back. Dark spot behind gill cover, usually with one or two series of silver spots behind it.They range from Noufounland and the Gulf of St. Lawrence to NE Florida. Adults run rivers to spawn. They are an important food fish, with a highly esteemed roe. The meat is mostly sold fresh. Numbers are depleted in much of it's natural range due to polluted estuaries and dam comstruction.
