May 2004 Guess The Fish Contest
Answer & Winner

This month's fish is a summer flounder or fluke. It is distributed in the continental waters of the eastern US, from Maine to South Carolina;further south it is replaced by the southern flounder. It is found from the shallows to the deep, where it spends its life either on the bottom or close to it. It prefers sandy to sandy-mud bottoms in bays and harbors as well as the mouths of estuaries. During the summer, it frequents shallow water;during the winter the medium and larger specimens are found at 25-50 fathoms offshore.
Although this flounder lies buried in the mud or sand most of the time, it is a rapid swimmer, being able to pursue small fishes, squids, crabs, and shrimps. The use of live bait consisting of minnows(killies) is sucessful, and summer flounder are also taken on squids, jigs, small spoons, bucktails, and spinners. This month's winner is Daniel Herman from Bellmawr, NJ.
