June 2004 Guess the Fish Contest Answer & Winner
This month's fish is a red drum, or redfish. Red drum can be distinguished from the black drum by the absence of chin barbels and the presence of a black spot or "ocellus" on the base of the tail. Studies have shown that red drum in the Gulf of Mexico do not undertake extensive coastal migrations; in fact there is little movement between bays. Along the northern part of it's range in the Atlantic, the fish is apparently migratory and seasonal in abundance. A bottomfish, it feeds mostly on crusteaceans and mollusks, although it consumes other(notably mullet) at times. A favorite of surfcasters along the Southeast coast of the US. Popular live baits include crabs, clams, bloodworms, sandbugs, mossbunker, and cut mullet. Red drum also hit spoons, plugs, metal squids, and leadhead bucktails.
This month's winner is Timothy Pearson
