December 2004 Guess The Fish Contest Answer and Winner
The growth oof this species has been studied in Long Island Sound. There, 2 year old fish averaged 4.5 inches in length, 4 year old fish averaged 9.5 inches and 7 year olds, 12 inches. Mysids appear to be the preferred food of the young, but individuals over 11 inches long eat sand shrimps and small fishes in equal amounts. The young fishes eaten are tomcod, smelts, hake, pollack, striped bass, and herrings. The maximum average length of adults is about 18 inches. Edible but extremely thin(the body transmits light ewhen held to the sun, hence the name windowpane), this flounder has no commercial value. This months winner is Jessica Pearson from Lumberton, NJ. |
