March 2005 Guess The Fish Contest Answer & Winner This Month's fish is an Atlantic Needlefish (Strongylura marina). They range from Maine and the Northern Gulf of Mexico to Brazil.Thier habitat is coastal waters, bays, and estuaries; enters fresh water. Needlefish live at the surface and are protectively covered for this mode of life, blue/green on the back silvery/white on the sides and abdomen.They feed heavily on small fishes. When they are threatened by predators, they try to escape by skipping rapidly along the surface. Needlefishes are caught readily on flies,plugs,jigs, and live baits.(I have caught them in a cast net, also). Needlefishes are edible, and thier flesh has a very good flavor according to the ID book, personally I think they stink to bad to think about eating them!!
