May 2005 Guess the Fish Contest Answer & Winner This month's fish is a Clearnose Skate. The clearnose ranges from Cape Cod to middle Florida. It grows to about 37", but most seen are less then 30", at which size it weighs about 6 pounds. It breeds inshore during the spring, and the young are hatched from horny egg cases after 3 months or more. A springtime inshore migration occurs and a converse offshore movement in the fall, the time of movement depending on temperature and latitude. Although a few are used as food, there is no commercial market for clearnose skates. They are often caught, sometimes in large numbers, by anglers fishing in inshore waters. As we all well know!!
