June 2005 Guess the Fish Contest Answer and Winner
This month's fish is an Atlantic Silverside, spearing, shiner. This species is one of a group of small silvery fishes that inhabits both marine and fresh waters in the Eastern U.S. and Canada. It is found along the shore and in estuaries from the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence to Cape May.
The fish is transparent green above with a white belly. A silver band, edged with a narrow black streak, runs along the sides.
Silversides average 3-5 inches in length and are popular as bait for larger gamefish. They also have excellent food value when deep-fried.
This months winner is Les Orange from Milleville, N.J.
