October 2005 Guess the Fish Contest Answer & Winner This months fish is a Florida Pompano.This Eastern Atlantic species is our most valuable jack. The flesh is firm and rich.The common name was adopted because Florida is the chief commercial source of pompano in the United States. They range from Santos Brazil to Massachusetts, in the West Indies at Bermuda. The largest known specimen is 25 inches in length. Maximum weight is 8 pounds. This is an excellent gamefish on light tackle. It strikes fast and runs fast. Beach-casting with live sandbugs is a popular method, but small artificial lures, such as jigs and flies, are successful also. This months winner is John Page from Darby, Pa.
