November 2005 Guess the Fish Contest Answer & Winner
This grouper is distinguished from the others by color pattern. The gag is commonly called black grouper in Florida waters but it can be separated by its plain coloration and lunate caudial fin.. Young individuals may be close to shore, but the larger adults are found on rocky bottom in deeper water. The black grouper is a good fighter, especially when taken by trolling with natural bait, or plugs, spinners or spoons. Very good eating, it is a grouper of some commercial importance. This months winner is Sonny Cortese from Glenolden, PA. |
